Fallen Giant

Gentle giant, heart of gold,
calloused hammer-sized hands
never raised in anger;
the rock of my shelter in
my youth.
My Father!

How it hurt to watch as
you battled cancer,
your powerful figure
falling from fatigue,
the vomit coming, unbidden,
after chemotherapy.

How it weighed upon me
watching Mom, as
you slipped from her grasp
after 43 years together.
You were our bulwark against
the storm, and now
it was eroding away.

Parades of people passed by,
saying goodbye to you,
remembering your comraderie,
your crooked smile,
the smiles you invoked.
(You'd never met a stranger.)

It's been twenty-five years
since that St. Patrick's Day
that I held your hand and
felt your life slip away.
It became cold and
heavy in that instant --
the instant you gave up pain
for glory!

Yes, it's been twenty-five years, but
I still hear your voice,
still feel the callouses on your
huge, warm hands,
Still feel the love as I basked in
that lop-sided grin.
I still miss you, Dad!

Time has a way of dulling the pain a little...but that longing and yearning for our departed loved ones never really goes away...
Your words brought tears to my eyes...

Tears. Reminds me of my Dad. "...still feel the callouses on your huge, warm hands". That's the line where I broke down. Sounds like they broke the mold when they made your Dad, also. Can't quite put into words what this write means to me, Dallas. A beautiful tribute...

Dallas -

We're both missing our Daddies ... doesn't get much easier. Miss him now more than ever - how I long to hear his voice, his laughter, would give anything to hear him say, "I love you." Powerfully penned tribute to yours - he would be proud of you. Well done.

((((((HUGS))))) and love, Karla. *tears*

It never gets any easier, does it? I lost my mom 19 years ago on St. Patrick's Day, the same day you lost your daddy. I'm so sorry! Powerfully penned, Dallas; well written!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :( >tears! <
