How Shall I Pray?

How shall I pray?
Death stalks my daughter,
circulating through her veins
with every beat of her heart.
Shall I cry out,
"Why me?"
Then, it isn't me, is it?
It took a whole year
for her hair to grow back,
the soft curls that now
fall like snow.
It covers her pillow,
her bedclothes --
we shaved her head
to keep it out of her eyes.
Those eyes:
blue, like deep pools of calm --
trusting eyes.
She's looked into the face of death,
not once, but thrice.
She's won her life
over and over again
like a little soldier --
a soldier of faith.
How shall I pray?
Perhaps a prayer
of repentance.
Her faith goes
far beyond my own.

A question many ask. Sometimes it is best to pray without words as he hears our spirit's groanings. J'nia <> <

Tough question, Dallas, that begs an answer, especially when it is your own child suffering - well done.

Children possess a sense of strength that is nothing short of extraordinary, especially in the face of illness, injury, or tragedy. Powerful write; well penned, Dallas!

The strength children demonstrate at times is incredible, far surpassing anything someone like I could ever muster. It really amazes me. I fear the same for my own child often asking "what would I do if?" Thank you for sharing these very personal and moving scenes with us. Beautiful writing.
