Another from the Crisis years. 1999 was probably the most uncertain year of our lives. Our daughter was ten years old then, now she is twenty, and in good health. Almost shocking, considering she had Leukemia three times.
Punch-Drunk
A wave of nausea sweeps over me --
or is it nausea?
I can feel my mind slip.
Thoughts claw for reality
on a surreal cliffside,
going through the motions of
waking, sleeping,
talking, laughing,
while every movement is hounded
by the specter of death.
Lifelong dreams whirl away,
vanishing down the drain of
unending expenses.
Jobs suffer
as we take time off.
Our hearts burn within us
as we watch side-effects
take their toll from our child.
There are words that everybody knows,
but nobody speaks,
as we are raked by claws of doubt.
We cling to each other
in a sea of superficial existence,
strength ebbing as we fight the tide,
the waves, the cold.
Nothing seems real --
or it seems all too real.
Is there any hope
for a reeling, punch-drunk fighter?
There's the bell.
A wave of nausea sweeps over me --
or is it nausea?

But the mantra of the prize-fighter is: it's not how many times we fall down; but how many times we get up! Nicely done!
The chaos and confusion of the battle against Leukemia strive to conquer hope, but hope survives and so does your precious daughter. I am grateful for the health your daughter enjoys today--and rejoice with you and your family in the triumph of life over death.
I CAN READ THIS AND SOMEWHAT UNDERSTAND BECAUSE YOUR PHRASES PRODUCE A VIVID CLEAR IMAGERY OF WHAT YOU WERE GOING THROUGH...BUT STILL...UNLESS I ACTUALLY EXPERIENCED THE PAIN YOU FELT, AS YOU WATCHED THE RAVAGEOUSNESS OF A MERCILESS DISEASE SWEEP OVER YOUR CHILD, I CANNOT REALLY KNOW WHAT YOU WENT THREW...BUT I DO KNOW WHO TOOK YOU THREW. BLESSINGS AND THANKS FOR SHARING.

How sad you had to go through that. But through a miracle, your daughter overcame this horrible disease. Going through the "she has leukemia" three times is awful.
If you tend to believe romantic, passionate, masculine poetry is a thing of past eras, read "She Intrigues Me," and be swept away in the beautiful craft of a contemporary poet of love.
