Envisioned quests, once inspired
Now foiled, forgotten, undesired
Hatred's stench pervades the air
Atmospheric witness to despair
Venomous deeds have taken their toll
Strengthening terror's unholy hold
Tainting compassion's visual lure
Slaying dreams and ideals, pure
Deceitful agenda, supremely reigns
While mortals clash and die in vain
Dastardly greed and putrid decay
Obsess our thoughts and actions each day
It seems the mighty mind of man
Once so inspired and oh, so grand,
Which sort to ascend to Godly heights,
Is now misguided and doomed to blight
Will this creative being, in the end
Destroy all life and land and friend?
Will this unique, splendid humanoid
Die and be damned to darkened void?
Has mankind lived and loved in vain?
Is life just some fickle game?
Or is there some great, grand plan
Imbedded within the soul of man?
I dare say we haven't lived in vain
Yet, we admit our destructive blame
But, is not growth the result of pain?
We will survive and perfect our aim!
Thus evil, we will banish or subdue
Perfecting clear vision and ideals true
Yet, I say that, ne’er again, ne’er again,
Will man, nor land, ever be the same!
sounds like the real effects that the 'new american dream' is having on the rest of the world. sadly to say, that is what i see when i read this piece. so much can be taken from this, that it could apply at any time, and any place. the sheer applicability and universality of this sad state of affairs is indeed its primary wonder. thank you for sharing it!
