DARE I STEP OUT of the BOX.

We grow up with imagination, it makes us believe in ourselves to a degree, yet life kind of knocks us down, or does it?

Poem Artwork

Its not easy being human

your born into a race for life,

yet you have this imagination

that fights to survive.

So as you grow

you feed it

believe you can become,

a singer an actor a musician

not just another human.

So you think outside the box

let you dreams escape

stand before a mirror

imagine you are great.

You did the unthinkable

you stopped believing in a box

you are now the one

that always was.

You.

Your parents tell you

stop daydreaming

you will never be that one,

when in fact they had themselves

dreamed such dreams

when they were young.

Now you have grown

so has the dream

reality is what it has sown,

you ask yourself

dare I step out of the box

try to become that one.

That imagined box has kept you trapped

ever since you were a child,

now opportunity stands before you

to grasp it you find so hard,

confidence is what you lack

so heads up

pull your shoulders back

go step outside

do not look back,

live your dream

while you can,

be the person you always were

without the prison of that box

just an open door

what was

is no more.

Yes. That box represents all our insecurities. I opened mine to write. We'll see where it takes me.

A poem with a powerful message. We are often sidetracked from our dreams by our parents, peers and teachers who want to put us in these boxes that they think we fit in. Many childhood dreams are suppressed like that.

When I recall my youth, I heard kids say they wanted to be a fireman, policeman or engineer (drive a train), some rather lowly expectations. I wanted to be both an architect and an astronaut. Those expectations were never thwarted by my parents or teachers who encouraged me to study those subjects and pursue my quest. Unfortunately, there were barriers, primarily financial, to my studies and those expectations were curtailed, largely by me. Still, I became an engineer and eventually a professor. My desire to be a writer was always there and was used intensively in my studies and my career. Now I can relax in fiction and enjoy just writing for the thrill of it.
