The fish leaps from one eye
to the other, transparent
except for an outline,
and the splash it makes
carries no sound, but
I know it is there
because I saw its
shadow as the sun
tarried low in the late
afternoon sky. So I
drop my line into
the shallow pond
of his eyes, colored
green with flecks
of gold, but
the fish is not
interested
in what I have to offer,
and so it
swims deeper,
to a place I cannot reach.
