Helpless

I will never forget this one elderly man in the nursing home that my parents were in. No matter what you tried to say or do, nothing eased his fear, his pain. I felt so helpless.
*Helpless* Hair unkempt, Mix-matched clothes, His head hangs low, Eyes stay closed, He cries out in pain. No one hurts him, They care for him, Want to feed him, Try to bathe him, He cries out in pain. His mind is gone, Lost child of a man, So frail and afraid, Hair of silver gray, He cries out in pain. Gently try to hug, Only to hear a scream, Speak softly and kindly, Try to reassure him, He cries out in pain. God please help us, Find a way, To hold and hug him, Please help us, End his cries of pain. Deborah Ann Tornillo Copyright© 2009
