Let me begin by defining or describing two power packed terms in the title "equanimity" (e-kwa-'nim- et- e) and "hyperbole" (hi-'per-ba-le).
Equanimity describes the unattached awareness of one's experience as a result of perceiving the impermanence - that is, it came to pass not to stay, - of momentary reality. Add to that great coolness, calmness, evenness of mind, i.e., be neither elated nor depressed with favorable or unfavorable circumstances."
Hyperbole means excess or exaggeration in a figure of speech in which statements are exaggerated as in "mile-high ice cream cones," "This book weighs a thousand tons" and "I tried a thousand times."
A person might be immediately prone to conclude that equanimity and hyperbole are contradictory and in opposition to each other. This is not necessarily so. When Blessed Equanimity" and "Spiritual Hyperbole" interface this is a paradox, not a contradiction. A paradox is a statement, proposition or situation that seems to be absurd or contardictory, but in fact is or may be true .
In the case of Blessed Equanimity and Spiritual Hyperbole the proposition is true as the experiences of many witnesses reveal. Just because few people may recognize the validity of this declaration does not in any way make it untrue anymore than it was untrue when people believed that the earth was not a circle but a square and that if a person traveled far enough north, south, west or east he woud fall off the earth into some abyss. With increased awarenesss I believe the acceptance of the equanimity-hyperbole theorem will be embraced by humankind causing many to experience increased joy.
Simply stated, yes, a person can be cool, calm, possess evenness in mind and be elated and express jubilation in a heightened and exaggerated way when appropriate. This is a spiritual experience that transcends the cause and effect paradigm. Even under strain and in the darkest night the person who allows equanimity and hyperbole to interface in his life can be cool, steadfast and as calm as still waters and explode with enthusiasm that is rooted in the assurance that joy will come in the morning.
Be aware that it need not be Blessed Equanimity or Spiritual Hyperbole. Both are the gifts of grace that can be enjoyed by everyone who pursues self-discovery. This is what it means to be fully human and experience life as a celebration. "Be still and know that I am God." I will be quiet enough to hear His "still small voice." And I will shout for joy while proclaiming with my one tongue as if I had a thousand tongues the wondrousness of God. Wow!
