Grandpa Benjamin by Uriah J. Fields is a novel that features as chief protagonist the author's paternal Grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Fields. In this book his name is Grandpa Benjamin, same as title of the book.

My Grandfather narrated this story to me (the author) that had been told to him by his mother. The story begins in the year 1776 when Grandpa Benjamin's great-great-great grandparents Bassti and Ashanti Nkrumga were kidnapped by American slavers in Africa and brought to North America. Once they arrived, via a slave ship, in Charleston, South Carolina, they were sold to two different slave-owners and they never again saw their two small children who were left in Africa.

Grandpa Benjamin was born during slavery in April 1862, one year before the Battle of Fort Sumter, near Charleston, South Carolina, where the first shots were fired that began the Civil War. The War ended on April 10, 1865, three years to the day my Grandpa was born.

Beginning with Ashanti who was captured in Africa, this book lists the generations that end with the birth of Grandpa Benjamin. Using the Biblical format for reporting generations, except here the maternal lineage rather than the paternal lineage is used: Ashanti begat Isabella; and Isabella begat Betty; and  Betty begat Sophia; and Sopia begat Roslayn and Rosalyn begat Grandpa Benjamin. After Ashanti only Sophia, the mother of Rosalyn was impergnated by a slave, a black man. The other women were impregnated by their slave owners or other white men. Rosalyn is the mother of Grandpa Benjamin.

Reading from Grandpa Benjamin I will continue begining with the escape of Isabella, her Indian Lover, Hitchitaw, and eighteen other slaves who escaped from three plantations in Georgia and took refuge in Spanish Florida. I will begin reading on page 21:
              A few weeks after the death of her mother Isabella
          and her Indian Lover,... (continue reading and end on              page 22 with): She named her daughter Dehgewanum,
          after her Indian Lover's mother. The name means
          "The Two-Descending Voices."
