Abandoned
Each night you will find him, alone in his room
Lost in his memories of days gone past
Memories of when they dumped him in the home
Rescued from his family, it had happened so fast.
He had sat on the steps just at the door
Waiting for Mother to come take him back
Away to his home, his bed, her hugs and more
He had wept as they came and dragged him back.
The other kids teased him when he wet his bed
On Sundays they made him go their church
They told him his Mummy and Daddy were dead
But he still ran away to go out and search.
He never did find them, he waited in vain
His Sisters and Brother seemed lost to him now
He learned to conform, hiding his pain
Memories faded, they were his family now.
On his seventeenth birthday, they said he could leave
They had found him a job and a place he could stay.
He walked down the road, his heart it did grieve
Alone once again, tears filled his eyes, as he walked away.
His marriage it failed, he just did not know.
How a family was supposed to be.
Forty years later, he has nothing to show
For a life filled with heartache and longing for She.
He cannot survive, he longs to go back
To the home, back to his youth once again
He can’t keep a job, he drinks, gets the sack
His children have left him alone with his pain.
Now he just sits there, humming a tune
From those days when youth filled his heart
Lost in his memories of friends he once knew.
He had not said goodbye on the day they did part.
He leans on the table, his hands on his face
He shakes as he silently sobs into the night
If things had been different, he’d not be in this place
And maybe his world would be sunny and bright
