Where is technology leading us. Have we become so dependent?

Full Circle

In ancient times man sat in his cave,
When the daily hunt had been done
Telling tall tales, both bold and brave.
Then slept till the morning sun.

In other times they sat in their huts
And family sat around a warm fire
Grandpa told stories, while roasting nuts
Till everyone yawned as they started to tire.

In houses of stone, round pianos they sat
When the family met at setting of sun.
Sang songs and told tales, or just chewed the fat.
Then slept and dreamed of days of much fun.

Remember the days when with pride of place
The Wireless sat giving music and fun?
Lanza and Jolson, Flash Gordon in space
Here comes the Lone Ranger, riding into the sun.

Then came television, taking the space,
Where the wireless had stood with such pride.
But the Family still gathered to watch every face,
The Rifleman and Hitchcock, took us on fantasies ride.

Now it has come, that insidious box
It has influenced most, made separate our lives.
Each morning we sit, in pyjamas and socks.
Not seeing the children, husbands or wives.

Long dreary hours spent talking on chat.
Reading and writing our emails galore.
Then around mid-night, we realize we’ve sat,
Punching a keyboard, eighteen hours or more.

It seems to me, we’ve returned to a cave.
Where nothing distracts from keyboard and screen.
The Family, what’s that? To the mouse we’re enslaved.
Could we return to the times that have been?

We no longer sit round the fire at night.
To tell of our day, at work or at play.
To sing and to dance till morning’s first light.
No, we sit in dark rooms, bathed in Monitors pale light.

"Full Circle" brings the message in full clear sound from the violins of wisdom.

This poem is one of a kind. "Full Circle" shows everything, including what we must do to be free.

This poem came as a prophecy, I hear You, Poet!

Thank You for posting this "Full Circle".

There is so much truth in this that it hurts...you have brought to light the facts of modern life in contrast to those beautiful days gone by. Excellent piece of work, Robin.

This is so true and so well said that it hurts, for I too now realize, that I have become a dweller of caves myself...very thought provoking piece...thanks

Robin, I love the deliberate truth in this piece. It is true we have built ourselves so into a little corner that life and family does not matter. Excellent poem my friend!

Sometimes progress is a dirty trick, yet we can't prevent change, but must ever adapt. How we adapt is our choice. Excellent write Robin!

So true.
I miss the days of rotary phones and neighbors you knew by name. In our quest to build this world of convenience, we seem to have built prisons instead.
