How many Drinks have you had?

************************************

Guilt
*************************
He sits alone across the Bar
You would find him there every night.
He stares at the mirror, tear-filled eyes.
Half hidden in the smoke hazed light.

His overalls, stained with grease,
Grips his drink with calloused hands
Another shot and the pain will cease.
He will drift away to other lands.

He looks again to see the scar
That runs the whole length of his face.
Reminds him of when he crashed the car.
Memories that whisky will not erase.

That night she had begged him not to drive.
He had laughed at her climbing behind the wheel.
He had promised that they would safely arrive.
He’d forgotten about, the whisky and meal.

He called to the Barman for another drink.
He orders a double, to kill the pain.
Closes his eyes tries not to think
He is trying to, slowly shut down his brain.

His shoulders shake as he sees’ them again.
They looked so peaceful lying there
His babies were only eight and ten.
Tresses of gold, they were pale and fair.

He put down his glass, walked out the door
He turned and gazed up at the sky
Tears ran down the scar on his jaw.
As he screamed to the Gods’ Why!

They found him next day, in the forest deep
He was sitting and leaning against a tree
His eyes were open though he seemed asleep.
His tear-filled eyes could no longer see

Within his hand, they found a small teddy Bear,
Wound with pink ribbons, it was tiny and furry
Two smiling faces from a photo lay there.
Written across it, the words,” I’m so sorry.”

A very heart rendering but pinpoint poem describing the anguish of mistakes that we all make in life. Sadly, some mistakes are more costly than others

"Guilt" is capctured by the micro-lenses of sage eyes and depicted by a wise mind with lexical bricks that built this house of knowledge in form of quatrains.

This poem, "Guilt" delivers its message under the cadence of the sounds of the music of life.

An enjoyable and striking reading from a profound writing.

It's the rare drunk who is sorry. Most continue to drink and drive, even when their license is taken away. The only pity they feel is self-pity. Thanks, Robin.
