It's sad that folks get caught up in relationships like this. It's not healthy for either party involved. You've captured a giver's emotions perfectly in this work. I can't help but think this is someone you've listened to...listened to and really heard. These takers are the ones who do not understand life and how wonderful it feels to give without reward. A thoughtful write! I once heard that a relationship SHOULD be a 50/50 proposition of give and take. IT JUST AIN'T SO! It's a trade-off with one giving 100% at times, and the other giving 100% at other times. (Sometimes, it's like your poem states--one partner does all the giving.)
Paul, I believe a lot of people could relate to this poem. I could feel the force of pain in every paragraph breaking a relationship apart. Fantastic write.

I agree you have expressed the pain, and hurt of poetry at its best when one allows freely giving of self and receiving emptiness, selfish return of tokens for the trust. Relationships are so harmful I felt like you were re-living my past life when I was vulnerable to such relationships, I even allowed and searched for them only to find love and acceptance. Then I let the Lord enter my life I never allow such fruitless relationships instead I pray for those that would attempt to control others that they turn and become worthy of a friendship.

Poetry at its best Paul. I can feel the despair and resignation in your words. How sad that others have the power squeeze the life from another. I was once in an abusive relationship so I can empathize with this poem. I also felt the life was being squeezed from me and I couldn't breathe. I also came to expect nothing but pain, sorrow and tears. How sad to live that way. This poem touched me deeply, Paul.
