Written in 2006 following the Katrina storm surge disaster in New Orleans, a tribute to the survival instinct of animal and man...
Ten dead birds
Broken necks
Twisted wings
Bloody beaks
Sunken eyes
One hundred broken trees
Laid low,
Piled high
Wheedled to sing
Sweet Autumn lullabies.
Wind scattered
Sky patterns
Run a leafy dance
Chris-cross the ever muddy ground,
Skirt the turf,
Let fly a tease,
Hopping
Over ten
Of
Ten thousand
Abandoned
And
Inhospitable homes.
One fat cat
Hoping
Opportunity knocks,
Last storm,
Next storm,
Lies sleeping;
Dreams of birds;
Dreams of trees;
Dreams of opportunities
Missed
Or yet to come.
Growing old,
Growing older,
We dream the cat.
We observe the patterns dancing.
We believe that the opportunity
Must surly exist,
Even as it is
In Heaven!
If you tend to believe romantic, passionate, masculine poetry is a thing of past eras, read "She Intrigues Me," and be swept away in the beautiful craft of a contemporary poet of love.
