When I was a young boy
had my hopes and my joys
playing in the square
all my friends were there
I remember back when
we were free of fear then
your neighbor could be counted on as a friend
and happiness
it always could be found
in an old Alabama town
Ice cream parlours Sundays
back to school on Mondays
everyone one you know
stop and say hello
I'll be back there one day
at the end of highway
when I've finished wandring all the world around
I'll be coming home
home
to an old Alabama town
I remember Gadsden
Chickasaw and Camden
Tuscaloosa too
all the towns I knew
Hamilton and Athens
Tuskegee and Dothan
every town unique and every town the same
they all say come and visit us again
come back around
to this old Alabama town
When I've gotten older
and this ride is over
I'll be coming down
where my heart is sound
I won't be gone forever
no place could be better
everyone you meet will tell you stick around
and when I get through
I want to settle down
in an old Alabama town
