based on a translation of "Benediction" by Charles Baudelaire
when by a love supreme
he wakens from the dream
his mother doth blaspheme
to God as babe is born
"oh nest of vipers I
would rather'd have give birth
than this whiny little thing
the wretched of the earth!
"his mother I may be
but I'll twist his mind so tight
all hatred I'll give thee
thou'll never see the light"
she sought to give him Hell
to make him under come
but angels wished him well
playing in the drunken sun
Bless me o Lord for I have sinned
again and again and again and again
talking to the clouds
dancing with the wind
laughing quite out loud
free of mortal sin
and they who would love him watch him with fear
and fooled by a face so pure and at peace
they try to make him suffer a tear
or perhaps to bring out the beast
they poison his bread and spit in the wine
and throw away everything that he may touch
and if they step in his steps they cry
bitter tears but maybe not ever so much
when he marries his wife on the block
tells everyone that love is guilt
she wants to be worshipped ad hoc
and knife in the heart she'd have kilt
Bless me o Lord for I have sinned
again and again and again and again
she seeks to replace God with her
and tear him with her harpy nails
and smother his heart like a bird
and cause all his faith to fail
he raises his eyes to the sky
and sees there the radiant throne
and praises his God up on high
who leaves him to suffer alone
he says "If there is a place for me
within the ranks of the Holy War
side by side with the sacred nobility
then I'll know what the Crown is for"
and that's when he finally learns
that his eyes are all that's left to tell
that truth was meant only to burn
and that Heaven's the mirror of Hell
Bless me o Lord for I have sinned
again and again and again and again
