LOOKING OUT OVER THE EDGE OF THE WORLD, a WWI song lyrics by Joel Sattler Looking out over the edge of the world I knew my time was almost over but I had to take this one last chance Looking out over the edge of the world I was just another soldier on the morning of the final advance Looking out over the edge of the world looking at the face of death knowing that everything they said was lies oh Mary don't wait for me I pray to God you never see... Looking out over the edge of the world knowing this may be my last breath and any minute now I could die Looking out over the edge of the world at the pretty Belleau Wood knowing that somehow maybe I could survive at least another day that's all I ask that's all I need just another day before I bleed... Over the top and into the fire through the shrapnel and barb wire the sergeant screaming "Wassa matter? Do you want to live forever?" 300 yards to the machine gun nests The bullets don't care if you're the best by the sheer weight of our bodies try to overwhelm the enemy fight our way from trench to trench killing men with our bayonets climb once more over the brink do not stop do not think do not stop do not ask stay away from mustard gas don't consider who to save Just pull the pin on the grenade artillery may make you deaf use it all til there is nothing left the only way you'll end this ride is break through to the other side arrows swords bullets or spears bombs and flames and sweat and tears frozen tundra or the mud 6000 years of war and blood [spoken] Then at last I knew it was sacrilege To try to look over the edge of the world ====================

During World War I,
it took a long time for the authorities
to realize that "shell shock" was a real ailment,
and not just malingering.

Nice one Joe...
This is only a glimpse of the hell and terror of a world at war.
This one rings so true:
"artillery may make you deaf
use it all til there is nothing left
the only way you'll end this ride
is break through to the other side"

My good friend was legally deaf from artillery. They did not allow ear protection in those days because they said you could not hear orders from senior soldiers. It was a tough life.
