I was just a weary traveller

searching for a final answer

in the night I boiled some water
with only an onion root
then a stranger came from darkness
and gave me the living proof

he said my brother do not hunger
do not pilgrimage alone
and into the boiling pot
he dropped a heavy stone

and suddenly there came a fragrance
of potatoes and of meat
and when we poured the soup in bowls
it was surpassing good to eat

and as the stranger left he said
remember charity above
all else and then you shall be bless-ed
for we are nothing without love
