I walked out of the Tastee Diner
after the 2 AM warning
too late to go down anywhere
too early to start up the morning

the rain had stopped the streets were wet
slippery with slick and leaves
and I pondered all over my last bets

then in the headlights I saw a girl
hitching the side of the road
all alone in an empty world
so I stopped and she got in the door

she was crying so hard I could barely see
the shape of the look on her face

I asked if she wanted the big police
or a hospital or church which to pray
but she only pointed and said mister please
and that's how she showed me the way

but then at a corner she jumped on out
and ran away into the night
before I could ask here what it was about
she took to her heels in fright

so I never told her what was in my heart
and I never did see her again
all I wanted to do right from the start
that whoever she was had a friend

although I don't know who you are
I would rescue you from all harm
