Everybody wants to go to Mars

everybody wants to find a Martian bug

everybody wants to the very first one

to find life beyond the sky



we used to think it was covered in canals

we used to think the Martians flied the UFOs

we used to think the planets were full of those

who wanted to conquer earth



but Mars is a dead planet if it ever was alive

as dead as the Moon a place where no one can survive

and all the science fiction tales were not but lies

H G Wells was telling lies



there is no reason for us to go to Mars

except as a stepping stone to the stars

we can build a base upon the Moon

and what is more, we can do it soon



from the Moon we can learn to live in space

if that is the future of the human race

we can set communications up

and learn our place

in the greater universe



the Moon has been the lover of the earth

ever since the first human child was birthed

and we can learn much more upon the Moon

than we could learn by using Mars

set my central plan in the biggest crater

put my station on top of the north pole

and send our signals out into the cold

but even he had to make it pay



there is no profit going to planet Mars

except as a stepping stone

to go out among the stars

and we're a long long way from that
