Poem Artwork

Night fell heavy on the city,
exactly fitting my mood…
exactly as I sat feeling empty,
empty and simply waiting to die
because my rhyme was spent,
nothing more to say or do,
but close my eyes.
And as I watched the night
settle behind the buildings,
I heard a distant sound,
a discordant tune
amidst its false tranquility,
sang by an errant breeze
and it spoke to me
to me… of things
I didn’t understand, or didn’t want to hear.
Nothing left to say or do,
but close my eyes.

But night forced itself into my slumber;
it took me down a road unknown,
and into a valley where dreams roam
free and randomly chose to
make you see…
see things the eye denies,
the mind, alert, cannot conceive.

There was a child, along that road,
abandoned at some point in life,
out there, amidst dawn’s lavender clouds,
she smiled and stretched her arms.
A young one I somehow recognized
and then she looked right at me…
at me, and there was verse
and rhyme in her clear gaze,
and like a whisper of the night
I heard it swiftly whisk by
me… and then I understood:
A poem, a poem I am…
I am with no beginning,
I am with no end.
And morning came, it came to me
yes, one more time.

Exceptionally well written, Carmen, concise and elegant:
"And as I watched the night

a discordant tune
amidst its false tranquility,
sang by an errant breeze
and it spoke to me
to me… of things
I didn’t understand, or didn’t want to hear."

Sublime with the je ne sais quoi that I write about in La Passion De La Poesie... yet, here you are, able to give it expression. Delightful and delicately poised, Carmen. Beautiful lines, full of wonderment AND reason; especially love "make you see... see things the eye denies, the mind, alert, cannot conceive". Potent, thank you. LOL Kate xx

A wonderful offering, Carmen. Out of dark despair rises a ray of hope. Powerfully symbolic and meaningful. Thank you for sharing this gift. Love and peace.

W o n d e r f u l. You have used repetition subtly a n d cleverly. Adds a lot, and the tone is exactly right. Wistful at first, but by the end, quietly triumphant. A n d you chose the perfect illustration. B r a v a !!! Phyllis <3

This is one of the better poems I have read lately, Carmen. It is just abstractly up, close and personal. I know abstract and up close and personal may not make sense to you, but it does to me and I'm the one writing these comments. Loved it. Very much.

A full compliance with Poetry's tasks "When Night Falls".
This composition delivers a profound message through its symbolistical and impressionist imagery.
