Art by Henri Silberman "A Poet's Walk"

Poem Artwork

If death should come quickly while in my sleep,
well then, I will not see the birth of day;
the loss of which will not cause me to weep,
good, bad, what’s gone is gone, be as it may.

If I should close my eyes and never wake,
I will not miss the dawn, or what it brings.
Not the fawn, the flower, ocean, or lake;
my spirit will not want of earthly things.

If curtain fall should catch my speech not done,
will you miss the words you’ve not heard me speak?
I will not miss the approval lost, or won,
play’s done; performance not up for critique.

But should I die not having known love’s bliss,
I will weep, though for nothing else but this.

Such powerful beauty and wisdom in A POET'S VIEW ON DEATH. One can leave behind earthly pleasures because they are grounded in material temporality but love is the bridge to the spiritually eternal and to leave without knowing it is, I think, to condemn one's spirit to a kind of limbo or chaos. My gratitude for this thrilling and inspiring write:-)

I totally agree with Nordette, Carmen. And Robert Frost is one of my favorite poets too so this is a compliment. Thank you for sharing this gift. Happy New Year to you with love and peace,

Wow, that muse must have really been roaming Muncie this morning! I don't do a lot of "rhymers" but when they come to me, I just let 'em fly, and mostly, they're good to go. But girlfren' girlfren sistah girlfren', this is sooooo so lyrical! I love the 3rd stanza. Your spirit was definitely in control of the production of this poem. I absolutely LOVE it!!

blessin's, the birds are waking up soon so I better catch some shut-eye (LOL)

CLASSIC BEAUTY or what, Carmen?? This has literally brought me to my knees and should be published alongside the greatest Shakespearean Sonnets... I am sure he himself would laud this work of art and give it first place. PRICELESS! Both in form and sentiment, this is class. I could be wrong, but this is so touching because I read that it is the experience of FEELING love that would be the greatest loss, not actually receiving it. I am cut to the quick. Would we have missed this if we were not graced to have received it from you - NOT HALF!! This is my very, very favourite piece of yours and flies into my Library Top 10 no trouble! TY and bless you, Kate xx
