October's Chill

some october reflections





october came to town
today
on the back of a chilly wind
light frost and red leaves
marked its progress

october chills me like
no other month.
not drear november
december bleak,
or frigid january
chills quite so thorough
nor so deep.

it is the chill
of the end of things
the chill of the grave.

octcber’s chill
invokes mortality
exposing most cruelly
my inevitable,
and galloping
death …

death
the word we
do not,
dare not pronounce

the name we do not
say

death
the extinction
of all that i am

or
the gateway
to another
“life”

who can say?

it is unimportant.

may i always
embrace
october’s chill
with passion,
and
humility

may
i
embrace that other chill,
when i come to it,
with the same

october came to town
today

your perspective is somewhat sombre yet you include the "the gateway to another 'life'" as the glimmer of hope and the continuance of life ... excellent poem!
