My grand daughter is 15 months old, and a charmer she is... This is the first of three that she has inspired.
I give my daughter’s daughter
back to her mum
basking in the warm glow
of the title
Grandfather.
There is a fullness,,
a rightness,
when you see the one
who bestows the title
snuggled up and buckled
into her car seat.
It is only later that
the other connotation kicks in:
Grandpa, old timer,
author of all that is wrong
with the world.,
the dust that
the new brooms
are trying to sweep away.
.
This comes later,
when the small one
has gone home
and I am left
in the dark,
once more, confronting
the indifferent distain,
and the smug conceit
of a society that prizes
not age nor wisdom
You are right on that point, it has become a world dedicated to the young and the knowledge and wisdom of those who came before are treated with indifference. Sounds like your granddaughter has stolen your heart....
Beautifully crafted poem.
You have articulated your very honest feelings so well.
These things should be revered for such richness and meaning.
Be well,
Christine

Well,if they don't appreciate age and wisdom it is sadly their loss...but isn't it wonderful that little grandchildren snugggled up (like little angels)can make up for that 'indifferent distain'
Thank you for sharing the high and lows of aging,I think you did this very well and it touched me and I could relate to it.

PS: I can't even remember when mine was a One Cat Household. As Ernest Hemingway said: "One cat just leads to another."
