How do you keep a dream alive?
One that will serve through
all of your days and nights, One
that will see you to the grave –
and beyond.

Glib religion doesn’t cut it.
Neither a strict adherence to
The Book nor a Sunday School
Jesus, mild and meek, has any
might, dominion or power.

Worship the Sun the Moon
the trees, the rocks, the wells?
Not likely. No power there.
None at all. Might as well
Worship your Uncle Fred...

What of the infallible, unfettered market?
The thrust and parry of competition,
The accumulation of capital, and the idol of
Efficiency? Take Uncle Fred to the Track
The ponies are a safer bet.

What of the cult of the Nation State
Hurrah for the green black and brown!
Liars and scoundrels, charlatan, and cheats
Wrapt themselves in flags – profiting
While good men must die.

How do you keep the dream alive?
Is there nought beneath heaven
Worthy of worship, praise, or honour:
Nothing to hope on upon earth?
No, there is not!
