The generic name, Xiphophorus, means "sword bearer". the "sword" referred to is the modified annal fin of the male -- 30 --

Lusty Xiphophorus feeding and breeding and birthing in the floating water weeds flashy sword bearers bright and jaunty ribbons of colour
