PREPARING

I don’t consider my writings as poetry,
more like simple rhymes….
just little bits and pieces
from the recess’s of my mind.

I write about things real to me
and try to leave a message,
so those who come along later
might have a smoother passage.

The words are not profound,
nor the message particularly wise,
I just want my next generation
to try them on for size.

When all is said and done
and I’ve passed from this earth,
I’d like what I leave behind
to have a little intrinsic worth.

Please read what I have written
without passing judgment.
I was mostly just passing time,
not trying to create a movement.

Memories and lessons,
water over the dam,
storm clouds and rainbows,
they all make me who I am.

Life has peaks and valleys,
the speed bumps of my journey.
It’s a sunset walk on the beach,
or a slow ride on a gurney.

I’ve traveled some bumpy roads,
but I’ve recovered from the pain.
I’ve walked the red carpet,
and strolled down lover’s lane,

We make our own beds,
it’s not perfection that I seek,.
If so, I’d carry a bigger club,
or learn to turn the other cheek.

 When things are going too smoothly,
it’s time to prepare for the fall.
Perfection was never promised,
more likely there’s no promise at all.

Heaven is not my goal,
 I suffer no misgivings,
seldom read the Good Book,
believe religion is for the living.

But, living clean and free,
looking out for all our brothers,,,
happens to be the way of things
for me and many others.

 So when you kneel to pray,
or converse with your God,
please mention my name
and ask him to give me a nod.
