Gizmo's Revenge

Gizmo is a cat that belonged to my son. He lived next door to me, but after his passing, Gizmo was taken miles away to live with my grand daughter. She didn’t stay long before she came up missing. Some weeks later she was back here. We don’t know what she went through to make her way back, but something scarred her. Now days, she’s very skittish and fearful of people, but we've slowly gained her trust.

GIZMO’S REVENGE

Gizmo is our kitty,
for a time she was alone.
One day she just showed up
and made herself at home.

She was always very skittish,
found it hard to trust,
but we set up a feeding schedule
and slowly she began to adjust.

At first we couldn’t pet her
she was having none of that.
But slowly, hand fed treats
brought her memories of trusting back

Eventually she’d sit beside us
though never in our lap,
she’d let us reach out to pet her,
but none of that other crap.

She’s always on the alert,
constantly well aware
and any sudden movement
will give her quite a scare.

She’s always fended for herself
trust seemed foreign to her
and though she’s coming around,
we’ve yet to hear her purr.

When she first showed up
she wouldn’t come in our home
and she’d disappear at night,
constantly off on the roam.

But now it’s been 8 months,
she knows we mean no harm.
Her resistance slowly faded
as Sweetie turned on the charm.

We’ve coaxed her inside,
and allowed her to explore.
We didn’t close her in
as constantly she eyed the door.

Now she comes in every day
and thinks she’s got us trained.
She has the run of the place
totally unrestrained.

She loves to lay in the window
always keeping track.
She’s always on the lookout
always has our back

It’s like she’s protecting us,
from what we do not know,
but she stays an hour or more
until she gets the urge to go.

She’ll be back at dinner time
to grace us with her presence,
then it’s out the door again,
an every night occurrence.

And every single morning
when we go out to get the paper,
She’s here to have her breakfast
before she’s off on another caper.

I know of many instances in which both dogs and cats somehow find their way back to the home they love over great distances. All of our cats are from the mean city streets, and none of them want to return there.

You did a nice job writing a poem about Gizmo's experiences. I admire your finesse with rhyming, too. She is a special kitty indeed!

Purrrrfect sounds as though this was written about our cat, strange how they never forget.

It is truly amazing how animals can find their way home no matter how far away they are taken, we also had a cat who, when we moved, refused to stay with us but kept going back to our old house where our neighbours would call us to come and get her...

Poignant story but bittersweet in the end. Love it. Liz

Our two indoor kitties would be soooo jealous of her freedom. However, what they don't know, and apparently Gizmo does, is that there be dragons there.
