I totally agree. Although I live in suburbia, I never put a leash on my little Pomeranian. Whenever we went out on the street he would keep close to me in my wheelchair so that he could run back and jump into my lap if he sensed danger.
I had a doggy door that he could use any time to leave the house and do his business. He could run from the front of the house to the back of the house to chase a bird or lizard at will. Actually wore little path around the corner of the house where he ran that way so many times a day. I never had to cut his toenails or his hair and he was very healthy but he was killed by a lab mix because he always ran out through the garage door when I opened it, one time to end up underneath a car with only a grease spot on his back to show for it.
