She lived in a prison
as a child..
One made up by adults..
She had no control
She could not talk..
Close a door..
Take a morsel of food..
Turn on a TV..
Pick up a phone
or just go outside..
No.. these were forbidden,..
Without permission..
They were always fighting..
Someone usually got hurt..
She was always in the middle..
Trying to stop the madness
Make it go away..
To just be a family..
Try it for a day..
After black eyes..
and a broken nose..
Countless black and blue marks
to her young soul..
After being called every name ..
This nine year old
could take no more..
So she finally..
grew a spine.
Or maybe she just
lost her mind...
she fought back..
she talked back..
she closed doors..
turned on TV's
She ate food sometimes
When she pleased..
She took her beatings
As they came..
But she continued
To confront them..
Because after all
She was insane..
She didn't care
If she lived or died..
She had no reason
To run
To hide.
She screamed at them
As they bruised her skin
"if that makes you feel better"
"Do it again"
And again..
And again!!!!!
Because she was insane..
Fat lips
Bloody nose
Broken bones..
Who cares
She was in control..
She didn't care..
She wanted her world
To burn in despair..
She wanted to take them with her..
Into her eternal hell..
THEY no longer controlled her..
She controlled them..
Controlled their emotions..
That led to their actions.
and even though she
had to live with the blame
and the pain..
It just didn't matter..
Because after all
She was insane..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Emotion is the enemy of rationality and logic.. When it becomes strong enough to control your actions..
Your life is no longer your own..
She loved them as much as she hated them.. but she was insane
Oh my dear Erica, how she suffered. How terrible an ordeal for one so young. To have to grow up and live with these memories all your life is so hard to do. The only weay we exorcise our demons is to let them out ... and you are doing this.
Each time we do this we lessen their hold on us. You are so talented. Use this talent to gain complete victory over them. One of these days they will be gone and your heart will be free. Bill
Oh my god, Erica...this is so eloquently quintessential, it rips into my mind and heart. It tells a million children's story, it is insanely sane, it is a nightmare to caring people, it will haunt me...
Still Living on my Feet is the follow up to Tichaona Chinyelu’s first book, In the Whirlwind, which was rooted in a sense of hard-hitting revolutionary black love. However, in this sophomore effort, Tichaona brings the revolutionary essence from deep
