A much needed poem! We all need to be reminded of what has and is happening outside our comfort zones, and I think this poem is a great example of the power of poetry for good. The poem disturbed me in my soul's depths...I had just been talking to a woman who was a young girl living in Germany at the time, and she was telling me of the night her city was bombed...Lord help us learn from history; to not repeat it.
In America that year everyone was preaching isolationism & like everyone else in this country we looked the other way with regards Hitler and his atrocities...give U.S. some credit, we did find out in the end...e
Andy, "Kristallnacht" was perhaps the most violent of the initial anti-semitic campaigns carried out by the Nazis in Germany. The horror and abject fear Jews and many non-Jews were subjected to those two nights in October of 1938 is unfathomable to me. Man's inhumanity to his fellow man may not have reached its zenith then, but it has not been surpassed by any other events. Even though there have been many instances just as horrible. Stalin's Russia, the killing fields in Cambodia, and other scenarios too numerous to elaborate on. As for America's real time knowledge, I do not believe the public at large was aware. I do know that Americans did not want to be involved in the war in Europe until after the Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbor. Hitler and Snow White. A cocaine driven narcissistic dictator and a marvelous fairy tale. What a strange and diabolically opposed pair. Would that Snow White was reality and Hitler the animated cartoon bad man. I enjoyed this poem . It reminded me of many things related to me by my late father-in-law. I bid you love and peace my dear friend. Jon Michael
A very powerful writing Andy and a damn good one too. For me I was taught there was a lot more going on not just American negligence. But I am not that much of a world war two history buff. So I trust you are right on.
Yes, such a tragedy this happened in Europe. My father saw some of the aftermath and it shook him to his core. You are right, the Americans were insulated from all of this evil, they didn't know what was going on. When this atrocity happened, to Jews and non-Jews alike, as soon as my father saw it he was deeply moved and in the front lines and I pray that we never see anything like this again. A most compelling poem indeed Andy.
