Amazing, innit, that what we think will bring us perfect peace - security, prosperity and all the trappings of worldly success - then becomes what we fear losing and what we then have to work doubly hard to protect. Let's face it, self-interest is the root of all fear; we have nothing to fear if we have nothing to lose. And in losing ourselves we find our true selves. So simple yet so hard and so seemingly counter-intuitive. xx
Whether by erudition or experience or perhaps a bit of both, these few words sum up a just explanation as to shy our history has suffered bu its own malfeasance, whether socio-political of religious corruption --both on its many battle fields as well as pulpits. The operative word--fear--never ceased to adapt to fresh generations of sword bearers. Yet, as you suggest, one has a choice.
