DEM STREETS
Hustler
Playa
Big Black
Today it's called big pimpin'
You were over 6 ft and some change, jet black, large in stature
You had a face with a tight, angry, chiseled look
I was 5'5 and small
Angelic face
Sort of shy and went by the book
I was in college and you were in DEM STREETS everyday
I came home to you on the weekends amidst jealousy, glares and angry stares
I just didn't understand
In addition to you being at the street's command
I wanted to see movies, hold hands, spend some quiet time
And gain your heart in totality
But the reality is that back then DEM STREETS were your priority
You lived in a nice place and went to the hood
I lived in the hood and was striving to get into a nice place
It's funny how you tried to shield me from your OTHER life
There were shopping sprees
Many hotels
Flowers
Candy
Meetin' your family and askin' me to be your wife
You loved me and I loved you too
It's just that I was going in a different direction
You were going the opposite of me and wanted no correction
Out of all those that she met
My mom (RIP) had the nerve to like you the best
She knew of your flaws but didn't care
She would tease me about bringing her some BLACK grandbabies
That she and your mom would share
The past is the past
But in case you have ever asked (yourself)
Why didn't WE last
Even with our long history
It's really no mystery
It was DEM STREETS that were always callin' you
