on a cold winter's night

i ponder the sight

of an innocent child

trapped on the street

with nothing to eat

not a roof nor a blanket

the ice cold breeze

cutting through her weary clothes

not once does it cross her mind

if she would survive one more night

and here we are in a warm cozy home

with a plate of food, a bed, a hot bath

still we complain about a small shortcoming

what does it take to realize

just how fortunate we are?

will you realize when you see the smile

of this homeless child, no fear nor worry

she is just ecstatic to be alive
