IN MANY PARTS OF THIS WORLD, WOMEN HAVE NO RIGHTS TO DEFEND THEMSELVES. HUSBANDS BEAT. WOMEN SUBMIT

In my village a husband has many privileges
He is entitled to shout and beat his wife
He gives no hand to help her in the house
He has more time to waste than to produce
He hangs around with others to loiter
He lingers until the sun cleans him from streets
Under the village tree he takes a retreat to chat
He kills the day with the spears of Lazy Talk
Boredom is his Time-Keeper to alert meal-time
From tree shade he rushes to the shade of a hut
He passes-by his wife cooking in the open
She comes in to give him their only stool
As he adjusts in the seat, his eyes flicker
They set out for a fault-finding mission
But Porridge intervenes before they insinuate
His wife brings it in a wooden bowl
She kneels down for him to pay respect
Soon he starts to complain
He says I smell dead smoke in the food
Before she talks, a fist lands on her face
Many more find their way to the chest
"Why can't you cook well" punctuates the fight
Finish. The war is over
Wife falls on the ground
Husband moves to next wife
Sad. She has not rights

Salaam, Abdi! I say this was perhaps one of your best this year. What an eye opener this poem! And the beating is not just confined to village men, the towns aren't safe for women either. Womem are not only beaten by ignorant husbands they are also exploited in ways that put the village hooligans to shame. I don't know about other religions but women do have rights in Islam and if anyone is to be blamed it's men's callousness and women's ignorance of their rights. In some societies women are abused in ways that are so devious that the abused women are themselves partners in their own humiliation.

Great job, Abdi!
Safi

P.S.
For your info, I suggest you take a moment to read "Rights for women" and "Under the protection of God". Both articles are posted on my site.

Abdi my friend I was just about to wrrite a piece about cultures around the world where women are denigrated. I started it some time ago but never finished the piece. There is definitely something wrong when men worldwide across all racial ,religious, and cultural lines can agree across the board on one issue, the subjugation of women. Women beaters are child molesters, they might as well own it. They want to have sex with and control children. SO SAD!! Men who beat women have lower self esteem than the women they are beating. FORGIVE ME I RANT!!

Lord have mercy... how can people live with such degradation and abuse of all kinds. In some cultures, the inequalities bring out the bestial in those who are deemed "superior" and power is obnoxious when used as a platform for self-aggrandisement. But I can't believe that the males who practice abuse are any the happier with themselves for it - it can hardly be a satisfying way for them to live either. RESPECT is an inert quality in every human heart and soul, I believe, that cries out to be given and received. You speak of a tradition and culture that perhaps is yet allowed to prevail because of so-called ignorance. But in the "civilised" (ho ho!!) world, these things are also an accepted way of life for some and a circle of vice perpetuates DESPITE the rights that we have. It is the human heart that needs to be changed as much as legislative systems - and I know of nothing that can effect such change apart from love. Gut-wrenching and vivid write; keep us thinking about such things so that we may begin to act upon the outrage in our hearts and minds. TY Kate xx

*tears* they do it because it is expected of them, tradition...

you can change things by continuing to educate and speak out against these awful things that happen. your wife is indeed blessed, to know she is married to someone who loves her for her and treats her as he would himself. you are a hero in my eyes, dear (((brother))), and i thank you from the bottom of this woman's heart.

(((HUGS))) and love, karla. *continued prayers*

POWERFUL, eye-opening write--BRAVO!

These are the hardest changes to make, Abdi Noor! In countries
where these old traditions are still practiced, you will usually
find illiteracy, starvation, warlords, and a mans hierarchy that
takes a revolution to defeat. In most cases the people are too hungry, weak of will and strength for such an uprising. That's why
the leaders get away with so much.I pray the necessary combination
of events will come about so change can take effect! Thanks for sharing your wonderful writes with us!

I hope that in time this will become a nightmare of yesterday and the women have rights.

abuse is wrong no matter where it occurs but it is really sad when it isn't even recognized as abuse. i assume you disagree with this way of life so people can change tradition

Sad. She has not rights

A truly sad and tragic state of affairs, Abdi-Noor. And truly hope things can somehow change for the better.
