PEOPLE ARE NOT PEOPLE IF THEIR LIFE DEPENDS ENTIRELY ON DONATIONS. THEY THINK THEY ARE ALIVE BUT THEY HAPPEN TO BE LIVING AS THE LIVING DEAD. tHIS LIFE SUPPORTING MACHINE CAN BE SWITCHED OFF ONE DAY AND THAT WILL BE THE END OF THEIR LIFE. AT TIMES OF NEED DONATIONS ARE VERY NECESSARY BUT IF PEOPLE DEVELOP A SYNDEROME ON SPOON FEEDING PRACTICES IT WILL BE HARD TO MAKE THEM HUMAN BEINGS ALL OVER A GAIN. NOW IN THE CASE OF MANY COUNTRIES IN THE THIRD WORLD, THE ONLY HOPE TO SURVIVE IS TO GET FOOD AND MEDICAL ASSISTANCE FROM DONOR COUNTRIES OTHERWISE THEIR SOULS WILL BE WASTED UNNCECESSARILY. AT THE SEA COAST THEY SPEND HOURS EVERY DAY HOPING THAT A VESSEL CARRYING FOOD DONATION WILL EMERGE FROM A DISTANCE. SOMETIMES THE CONSIGNMENT IS AIR-FREIGHTED AND THEY KEEP SCANNING THE SKY FOR ANY POSSIBLE FLIGHT WHICH MIGHT DROP SOME FOOD FOR THEM. THE RECEPIENTS SHALL RETURN THESE INPUTS EITHER IN CASH OR IN KIND BUT THEY DON'T KNOW THAT THE GIVER WILL ONE DAY CLAIM ALL WHAT HE HAS PROVIDED TO THEM.
A CHILD IS TAKING HIS LAST BREATH
ON HIS DEATH BED HE IS LYING
MAY BE HE IS DYING FROM HUNGER
NO ONE COMES TO HIS RESCUE
NO ONE BOTHERS TO SAVE HIM
EVERYBODY WAITS FOR A DONATION
A HOUSE IS COLLAPSING ON ITSELF
ON ITS WALLS YOU SEE WIDE CRACKS
MAY BE IT IS TOO OLD OR OVER USED
NO ONE COMES TO MAKE REPAIR JOBS
NO ONE BOTHERS TO SAVE THE HOUSE
EVERYBODY IS WAITING FOR A DONATION
CAN SUCH PEOPLE BUILD A NATION?
THE WHOLE NATION IS RUN WITH DONATIONS
SOMEONE MUST BE GIVING IT INTENTIONALLY

Abdi Noor, this write co-incides exactly with what happened in New Orleans after Katrina! You may not know all that occured, but this is the perfect example of what happens, when people live solely on government help and become so used to it, that when a crisis occurs they wait for the government to take care of it for them. Many drowned and starved etc waiting for something that in scope was too huge for the government to handle. Yet the people still think it is not their fault and blame the government for not being there fast enough. It is pure hypocrisy to rely strictly on government or as in your case donations! I understand your frustration. We can only hope and pray that each individual will become educated enough to help themselves and not rely solely on others. God bless you and your country!
I know just what you mean, Abdi. But there are very many people who give from their hearts without any ulterior motive - only sometimes they have no idea how it is being used. While we must make efforts to track them, I hope something filters down at least. You write from the heart and your angst is well understood. - shoma
In consideration of the fast reviews you made on this poem i wish to highlight that what I am concerned is the nature of aid business generated through the world monetary institutions in general and not the individual donors who give their money with compassion and purely on humanitarian grounds. I must appologize if my message took a color I never intended to paint.

We must always remember that the source of the donation rarely has control over its distribution. It's also not healthy for a country to survive totally on charity. At some point they must learn to help themselves, words will not nourish the poor starving child. Very thought provoking write, my friend.
