Lack of peace in my country, Somalia, led the poverty mountain grow bigger and bigger. Unless we get a functional government we shall not lead a normal life. Those Somali politicians and warlords who want our situation to continue like this are criminals and should be held responsible for the death of thousands of Somalis who can not be accessed by welfare agencies due to insecurity and chaos in their respective areas. The International Aid Agencies are now camping in neighboring countries to help Somalia in almost all secrors of relief and development.
We are in deep economic crisis
Our nation is shattered by war
The national coiffures are empty
Agencies shuttle around smartly
They are UN. They are the NGO’s
They are engaged in raising funds
Money comes in the tune of millions
But we have no banks to deposit it
Nor do we have peace to let agencies come
Our security environment is quite unstable
Our situation is monitored from a distance
Aid offices are open in neighbouring countries
A hefty sum is paid for their operational costs
A penny spent there is a pound wasted
A post filled there is an opportunity we missed
A minute squandered there is a time robbed from us
Between the donor and the recipient there is a mountain
The bulk of the aid input is milked on one side
Only the shadow of the rain reaches us here
We are on the other side of the Poverty Mountain
My heart weeps for you and your Countrymen, Abdi-Noor. The aid agencies have their difficulties and their corruption just like everyone else. There are those who are trying to help, but unrest and unsafe conditions keep them from getting to the people who need help the most. There needs to be a way to offer a hand up moreso than a handout. A handout needs continuous feeding, a hand up is a brotherhood working side-by-side to make the world a better place to live. Somalia needs humanitarian assistance and they need it now, but unless the corrupt government is unseated so that aid can be brought to the people, there is little hope of that happening. I will keep you and your fellow citizens in my prayers.
Take care,
Sherry
