The harsh nomadic life in Somalia has put girls in a difficult position of abuse and disrimination. We must use education as a powerful weapon to combat discrimination and gender abuse.

Waris gave birth only to girls
This time Warfa expected a boy
But a third girl had arrived

A cloud of gloom landed on him
Happiness soon departed his face
Had he known he would get a girl
What would he have done to her?

Warfa is a typical Somali nomad
He has a large herd of camels
He very much prefers boys to girls
Gender discrimination starts at birth
Physical strenght plays a major role

Only boys and not girls can tend camels
Boys not girls can chase camel rustlers
Boys are seen as good fighting material
Birth of a boy means birth of a fighter
And without fighting a nomad can't survive

In the context of Somali nomadic system
Gender abuse is intricately woven in our culture
So hard it is to eradicate at urban level
An attack on the base is a best stragegy
Otherwise we are wasting time and resource
An entire makeover is needed to make a change
