When the terrorists attacked Twin Towers with airplanes, many nations were suspected of sponsoring terrorism or providing safe haven to terorists. Somalia was amng them. One of the biggest money transfer companies of Somalia, Al-Barakat, has been closed. Customers who had either deposits in that company or used to use it as a transfer channel got shocked with the move. Some families immediately wn\ent to the bottom of poverty after all their assets have been frozen.
My family is suffering from starvation
I lack money to buy some food for them
Remittances did not reach me this month
The bank of Al-Barakat has been closed
It was the only life-line this family had
I am buried in a heap of financial troubles
I can't afford to settle them decently
Nor can I find a way to escape the mess
Septemebr 11 had stripped me naked
Please give me that newspaper over there
Let me see if I can cover my manhood

Abdi Noor, your message rightfully shocks us with the impact of this poem. It is good for others to share with us that they too have been hurt by the acts of terrorists! 9/11 is an event that reverberated around the world, and sadly it is what the terrorists want. I'm sad to say I believe there will be much more of it to come. May we all pray without ceasing.
A painfully apt illustration of the negative ripple effect of September 11 specifically, and terrorism overall, around the globe. Many of us find ourselves feeling exposed and vulnerable in these days of war, terror, and chaos. Nothing changes until ALL involved commit to the goal of peace and mutual respect for individual nations as well as individual persons.

As usual evil hits the most innocent. It was not only Somalia that suffered. Our small country, Malta suffered too because tourism suddenly fell and many businesses were closed. Victor
This is very sad, Abdi-Noor. We have had banks shut down here in the USA also, and for many it has been the same situation that you speak of. The difference here is that there is a group called the FDIC, an insurance company, which nearly all if not all banks deal with and which insures accounts to a certain point, which I think is something like $50,000.00 U.S. The people who had funds in the defunct bank, that was insured by the FDIC, will eventually get at least part of their money back. Still, initially, the people are left with nothing and for many, who live from paycheck to paycheck, this is a hardship that rips apart their lives and from which they never recover financially.
