In 1993 NGO's have come up with an initiative to give food to anyone who brought garbage in an effort to clean the city. But the initiative had turned deadly when all garbage in the city had fallen in the hands of the gunmen. War broke out between the public and the gunmen and between the gunmen themselves. That ugly war left many young men and women dead while the city was buried under piles of rubbish which were terribly stinking during the rainy seasons. Worse still diseases broke out as a result of the poor sanitary conditions of the city. Children died from diarrhea and other infectious diseases due to these above-mentioned reasons. Somalia was hit left and right

An International NGO in Somalia said
"Bring only one sack of rubbish
I shall give you its equivalent of food"

Then the garbage war had begun
Gunmen seized heaps of rubbish
They killed anybody who came near it
Many have died in a cross fire over garbage
Much to the disappointment of the gunmen
The agency suspended activities and left

But sadly enough the garbage war didn't stop
Gunmen demanded money from city cleaners
Gun-totting boys had become rich overnight
Garbage ownership became a great fortune
We had tons of un-removed trash in Mogadishu
Before warlords were chased out of the city

Islamic Courts destroyed their operational base
A clean up campaign has now started in all towns
And women are at the forefront of the noble activity
Let's praise Somali women for their heroic feats
Their laudable gallantry deserves our appreciation
