A century ago they sailed to our shores to take our land. It cost them high price: Blood and money. One hundred years later we are making a risky sea expedition to reach European shores, in search of better living standards,leaving behind the land our forefathers have so bravely fought for. We are reaping the fruits of dictatorship, bad governance, warlordism, civil conflict etc.
One hundred years ago today
We sighted a ship in our sea
It brought European colonizers
We fought with them fiercely
We did not want their arrival
We did not want to lose Somalia
But with their superior fire-power
They managed to silence our boys
Today one hundred years later
We are migrating to Europe
We are seeking protection
Not from aliens or enemies
But from ourselves and tribes
What a paradox!
Evil were those who colonized us
But more evil than those evils
Are those who forced us to flee
They are the African dictators
They are the Somali Warlords
The Europeans got out while the getting was good, leaving Somalia in shambles...shame. Now, Somalians are at the mercy of warlards: sad. You and yours, your nation, are in my prayers.
Excellent write my brother. I admire your critical thinking skills. A century ago, we lived happily in our homes but the Europeans were not very happy because they were in the middle of the industrial revolution. They needed a lot of labor input for their industrial development. They had to find slaves to provide free labor.
Today Europe is develpod and came up with ways to fill up the gap. They no longer look for free labor, but cheap labor. The competition now is for natural reasources like oil and stones. They are the only ones with the know-how, so we have to follow the resources. We, on the other hand, no longer love in a peaceful place. Choas, poverty, disease, lawlessness, lack of basic necessities- Food, medical care, clean water are the norm in our countries. There is no visible solution for the problem. The warlords are changing shirts each day to keep their grip on society. It really worries me Abdinoor.
