Lay Me Back In God’s River

This is my first attempt at song lyrics. A gospel music singer asked me to write the lyrics for a song after he had read some of my poetry. We are currently setting this to music and attempting to make the arrangements for a demo tape.

VERSE 1:

I was taught from a little child that God would save my soul
Mamma and Daddy both told me that I would then be whole
I didn’t understand what that meant or what they were talking about
I only knew they told the truth; of that there was no doubt

Chorus:
Lay me back in God’s river and wash away my sins
Give me everlasting life through the very end
Write my name in Lamb’s Book Of Life so I will be made whole
Just lay me back in God’s river so God can have my soul

VERSE 2:
As we sat in church one Sunday night God’s words seemed to call to me
I prayed for the first time in my life for my soul to be set free
I prayed to God to save my soul and to purify my heart
I told God how I wanted Him now, and how I would never depart

Chorus:
Lay me back in God’s river and wash away my sins
Give me everlasting life through the very end
Write my name in Lamb’s Book Of Life so I will be made whole
Just lay me back in God’s river so God can have my soul

VERSE 3:
I recall the very moment that night when God entered my heart
I remember that feeling of joy and love; that I would forever be a part
I remember the look on Mamma’s face; that we would meet again
And on that day our souls would sing through the very end

LAST CHORUS:
God laid me back in His river of love and washed away my sins
He gave me everlasting life through the very end
God wrote my name in Lamb’s Book Of Life when I became whole
God laid me back in His river of love when He claimed my soul.
