HE WAS AND HE WASN’T


I’m not! but the funny thing is
whenever I’m in a bookshop with a woman
and I say, ‘There’s Oscar Wilde!’
I may as well be, for, two to one,
I’ve probably ruined my chances
for mentioning the Irish author
the said gentlemen.

There’s a cooling off, a fear in the air
It’s sad, I know.

I’m not a Man’s Man, or a Poet’s Poet,
but the funny thing is,
When I mention Oscar they think I am.

I’ve been known to test the boundaries
growing up, experimenting, finding my own voice,
which is not – most emphatically – falsetto,
but truthful and sincere, deep and meaningful

so, as promised, I’ll let you know
how I’m getting on ...

just signed a deal,
a six-figure sum, a new book on Wilde
titled, 'He Was and He Wasn’t'

And, strange to say, I’m not,
nor ever will be
big-headed about it.
