He's Not Superman Anymore

It always began with a story,
That grew into a legend.
One that he always believed.
Beginning with the ‘Man-of-Steel’ who was now sitting under his oak tree.

He looks but he doesn’t understand,
That the old man he sees isn’t Superman anymore.

He can’t walk without the help of his cane,
Because of the Kryptonite in his knees.
His cape, nothing but a dingy old coat.
He’s standing out there with his eyes closed against the breeze.
And the boy knows then,
His grandfather was always more than he claimed to be.

Never one for the fame or the glory,
To him, it was just something he felt he had to do.
To the boy who wanted to be just like him,
It was more than just a story.

And he’d give up anything to watch his Superman soar.

This takes me back to how I felt about my grandpa. He was a farmer and I thought there was nothing he couldn't do. He was my Superman.

Mariah...
You did your grandfather proud with this write my dear. There's a tad of your brother here as well but his bones are titanium but none-the-less...he's a powerful man. You have given my heart bountiful reflections with this write. I am so very proud of you.
Love,
Mom

Poet, this is a very well-written sentimental piece of poetry, and it reminded me of how I felt about my own grandfather. Now, as a grandfather myself, I continue to struggle trying to leap tall buildings in a single bound, without the aid of a trampoline nearby or having my eldest son, tossing me over the roof… lol. I enjoyed this piece very much. Thank you for sharing it. Take care and be well.
