Knight of the Sorrowful Countenance

Just before twilight,
I sit at my desk
to sketch my profile,
aware that fifteen years have passed
since the last time.
Number one pencil in hand,
I begin with my most prominent feature,
my celebrated nose.

The hand mirror tells me
that I have paid scant attention
to my gaunt appearance
in recent years: my ears
appear larger, face leaner,
cheek bones bonier,
hair thinner, forehead
more pronounced.
I see the face of my late father
more than the earlier me.

Nature forces me to sketch myself
as the chivalric
Don Quixote de la Mancha,
in rusty armor, seated
upon my spindly Rocinante;
to the right, straddling
his ass, my faithful Sancho Panza,
my helmet a misshapened barber’s bowl,
strapped to my left arm
a makeshift shield, in my right hand
a broomstick lance.

Undaunted by my emprise,
I prepare to defend
the virtue of a comely damsel,
my fair Dulcinea.
As I sally forth
into the night to battle
an army of stubborn sheep
and a field of howling windmills,
I notice that I clank.

:) lol
your close brought smiles to my face in the visions your poem expresses...
you are an artist, even though I do not know if you scetch with charcoal pencils or not for sure, but I do know with certainty that you scetch our minds with your poetic verses very vividly Gene :)

I enjoyed the way you blended this drawing/caricture of the author of the poem to show how a man has aged but suddenly, as a surprise, transitions into a Don Quixote de la Mancha, a favorite play of mine since I spent so mmuch of my life tilting at windmills while seeing dragons. You've given me another idea for a poem. Thanks.

Absolutely love that last line, Gene. Your wry sense of humor eases its way through your lines and while light-hearted self-deprecation is evident here, there's also a deep sense of quiet confidence that permeates your work. I really like that.

SC got it right, who cares that you clank as long as your heart and soul is working and we know it is, you're a 10 Gene in our book. Thank you for sharing.

The clank, the rusty old noises of the joints and of the mind, I can feel and hear them...and that's just as I type these comments. I won't try to walk today. A brave and noble piece, Gene.

Gene,

Know you're getting older when your adversaries are sheep and howling windmills! (Enemy getting weaker.) Mayhap (love that word) YOU see an aging warrior, *I* see an endearing father in the mirror of your words. Thank you. Well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Ewe did it again, you're Windy, Gene...sheep and windmills should be kept alive because they work...when they're gone, we're gone too, gone with the wind, and frankly My Knight Williamson, I give a damn! An easel of joy is this poetry, a self-portrait of time-honored genes...DNA poetry...

Love,
Sage
