Poem Artwork

Warm drizzling night at the shore,
front door open, she
came scratching at the screen.
I let her in and thought, bad idea.
I was right, she sensed it
as soon as she drank her milk and dashed
to the couch, settled in my lap. She
knew what she was doing, this young
orange hussy making a play for me.
I called her Kitty, except when
she clawed the rug or chased the birds
or missed her box. Then I
called her Cat! I called her Cat a lot.

She grew to be my independent friend.
We played by her rules. I took
what I could get. We walked
meadows together, climbed trees
together, me in pursuit as she
climbed higher, higher,
me calling Cat!

She slept by me, hogged the bed,
greeted me when I came home,
followed me room to room even when
I tried to hide. I never knew who was more
delighted when she found me.

The years passed and Kitty seemed
so permanent, always there
curling through my legs, on my lap, on
my desk, her motor running, in my thoughts.

Only memories are permanent.
At the vet’s I held her in my arms, tried
to smooth away the hurt. All I could do was
groan with her, hold her tight
before the vet took her away, on my hand
the scratchy touch of her tongue.

Gene - By the end I felt that I knew the personality of Kitty, too, and mourned with you. I was glad that you were there to comfort her passing.
I have been there and I know how hard it is. - David

I like this Gene. It shows a softer side to your rough-hewn edges. Scratchy cat tongues aren't easy to forget. I love our cat, but I wish for all the world I wasn't so allergic. --CHarlie

So sorry for your loss, and may your friend Kitty live on in your heart and soul forever. I, too, was very fortunate to meet a young orange tabby who became a wondrous friend, and dear old Buddy was by my side for 20 years. I lost him two years ago, and sometimes I swear I still hear him calling me.

Gene, I went through this some years ago when I lived in Ct with our cat who lived to be 14 years old...he became deaf, thin, bald in patches...the vet thought from feline leukemia...and we had him put to sleep...I cried like a baby. You've touched my heart, Gene, for you tell the story in a way where we can feel your words.

Gene,
(TEARS) What a beautiful tribute to your precious cat. It brought tears as I read the end. I know how you feel, Gene. I have a wonderful pet dog and I know the day is coming when he won't be with me. He's a shining light in my life, as your pet was to you. Loved this write, Gene...it shows your heart.

Many blessings,

Big lump in my throat Gene as I have a kitty and she is like a child to me and knows when I am lonely and comforts me. She came to me when I was very depressed and she is what the Doctor ordered. Thank you for making be remember how lucky I am.

Lump in my throat and tears on my cheeks - cats have this way of purring their way into your life, and when they go, a huge void is left in the heart - painfully penned poignancy, Gene, I'm so sorry. :(

Gene,
I can identify much too readily with this pain, forgive me for this but it's like losing a child, the attachment as fierce and binding. This is evocative, rich, stirring and heartbreaking.

Oh, man--I'm blubbering. They give us so much, and we miss them so much when they're gone. I've reached the point, so long in this house, that I've got little feline ghosts all over the place. What a cute tree picture--what an adorable character.

Oh Gene, always so difficult to say good-bye and only have photographs and memories of the life once lived. Lost my Cheyenne some years ago and still place colorful flowers (her favorites) on her grave each week....

Be always safe,

I love the more evocative descriptions of time and place and relationship as set alongside the gradually more concrete, to add weight, emotion and specificity to this heart-ripping tale. I will remember her motor running and scratchy tongue for a while as I linger on the beauty of this cross-creature bond. Very lovely, Gene, and sorry for her/your pain. I already know of it and am dreading the inevitable next... Kate xx

Tears for I went to the same thing...Cindi Sue never left me when I was sick, she laid right by my side. So when she was dying I laid on the floor talking to her, rubbing her belly and telling her I loved her. I was davasted. Love and hugs and thanks for the cleansing.
