They grope in shadows,
they stumble, his tight lipped guide and he
through the cluttered rooms
of a haunted mind.

He stammers incoherently,
creeping as a boy again on trembling hands
and knees,
fights back tears that grown men hide.

He feels the chains,
hears the breaking glass, clenches
a bleeding fist,

the banging in his heart shuts out
the whispered screams.

He braces himself to follow
silent footsteps down subterranean corridors
that go nowhere,
searching for daylight in darkness.

A door appears, slowly begins to open,
lets the light come in to drive away the ghosts.

He shuts his burning eyes
stunned by the light,
cries a muted cry for help…

A distant voice replies Alles hat seine Zeit.
A clock strikes: the door slams.

Ok Gene I won't sleep without a night light and the closet door has to be closed since I was a child and now I need a blankie to keep away the chills that you have running through me, lol. Great write. Thank you for sharing.

This is more internal than external, the ghosts within ourselves searching for light and meaning, ways of escape. Strong and dark and very worthy.

Now this is chilling in a deeply emotional and intellectual sense!

....the air in this is stilled and chilled and vaporous; like choking when you know full.well that you can breathe.....like swallowing the last of your self trying to find it again. .. .you make the the most fearful of isolative moments seem very audaciously fearless, as if one can grip the grim reaper's hand, and simply shake it and smile. ..
this was captivating.

Fantastic poem, Gene! I sense that this could be a life-long intruder in the mind, that cannot be removed. Surely a script for a scary Hitchcock type movie, a psychological thriller!...Go for it!;-)

Gene this reminds me of someone facing/uncovering old fears...it has a hypnotic quality to it...someone being led through the attics and closets of their life...Great read Gene

Sometimes the horrors are in our minds and we project these fears out into the open. Very intriguing piece...

I'd run like thunder, too, if I heard a disembodied voice saying, "Everything has his time." Good grief - this is chillingly effective! Well done, Gene.

This reminds me of the movie I watched last night, Goya's Ghosts. If I had lived back then, I wouldn't have given up scotch. This is a mind in great distress. I've been there. It sounds familiar.

A psychological thriller - ghosts of one's past haunting the mind - trying to find a way out of the sinister recollections only to find it is not the right time? This is my interpretation. This poem is eerily sad. Maybe the healing can well up from the heart and infiltrate the mind with the light it needs to no longer be afraid.
