phantom lovers

outside myself
i see myself
invisible in the crowd,
speaking in silence
to all the vacant faces.

she walks by,
touching me unknowingly.

naked nerves
drive me to a quiet chamber
in the attic of my mind,
her haunting image
imprisoned there,
glow of the hearth
beckoning.

i slip through
restless veils that dance
to ancient rhythms,
bind me in the pleasures
of the moment.
purple flames skip
across the smoldering log.

we are shadows on the wall
in the attic of my mind.

strangely, "phantom lovers" appeared in my in-mail this morning as a new post. not so strangely, your beautifully worded image, "i slip through / restless veils that dance / to ancient rhythms," speaks to my waking dreams this saturday morning. ~ leslie

Plays straight into my firey obsession with the film City Of Angels, Gene! "we are shadows on the wall in the attic of my mind". Aren't we just. Destiny calling. Totally love this, xx

This one brought me to tears Gene, this is romantic, self-revealing perfection. Stunning write.

Chills for me in this write, Gene... I love the imagery of the veils, and find the line "in the attic of my mind" to be sheer poetry. (But I am a sucker for that kind of talk, so don't get a big head) --Charlie

Gene I believe all these emotions come from the colour purple because I have had the chance to read some of Shee's and I tell you, you are both thinking romance. Great write dear and thank you for sharing.

Talk about rhythms. This exquisite poem is accented with perfect musical rhythm by the choice of stress on each word, or skipping a syllable. Your lines sing. They can be interpreted several ways, I think. I choose the ethereal meaning, the "attic of your mind" being a place you go when experience flits by your body. Hugo would have loved this poem. Soft, as Debra said. Definitely a poem to be read out loud. Golly, Gene, what next? Your fan, Kathy

For me, the first two lines are the greatest and most telling ~ I love the idea of the "deliberate observer." I am captured by the notion of consciousness beyond consciousness. Further, you have managed to balance this "from the outside-in" perspective with a very intimately inward conjuring that is provocative and sensual. It is interesting to contemplate just how many of those vacant faces also have this rich, inner world unfolding from within. I love the simplicity, grace and restraint you have demonstrated here, Gene.

Gene,
You switch beautifully from anonymity to individual focus once 'the contact' is made and the possibility of "glow of the hearth beckoning" which I see (in my sick mind) as sexual attraction and opportunity reinforced later by "purple flames skip...log." And yet there is a deliberate openness and ambiguity about the whole piece and that makes it so tantalising.

If we live long enough and lose many of those we know and love, all we have left are the memories/phantoms in our minds. Early morning when it is still dark, I find pleasure visiting those phantoms, but sometimes I find grief and tears. My mother cried a lot the last few years of her life after her last friend died and she was alone most of the time stranded (her choice) hundreds of miles from what family remained. I wonder: Do some of us chase sorrow when we are older to punish ourselves?
