Man, one harmonious soul of many a soul,
Whose nature is its own divine control.
-Shelley

Am I conclusive
as a yawn, a heartbeat,
separating silences,
a singular self certified,
seemingly identified in a print,
a name that tells the who,
a taxonomic code
classifying the what
categorically?

Call me a tree will I be me?
I have gills you cannot see,
bleeding I taste the brine.
I have the bone of a tail
and long to swing on vines,
my eyetooth is a canine.

Try to picture me
beyond the limits of the mind,
what would I look like
on planets yet uncharted?
Am I the unknown x
in some mathematic equation,
some potpourri of chemistry,
the printout of a DNA computer?
Am I the tic of some disquieting thought?

Am I an out-of-focus protoplasmic
lantern slide?

Am I the amplifier
of fits, frights, appetites
communicated by the genes?

Am I an actor
in a walk-on role prompted from within
by a sotto voice imitating mine,
the butt of some empyreal prank,
a cosmic laughingstock,
the figment of a Jovian dream,
a Fortean freak
dropped from some Super Sargasso Sea,
a shadow on the wall of Plato’s cave?

Am I an urge, an impulse,
a predictable response, an echo,
a Darwinian link to some primeval stew,
an anthropocentric artery,
a truck of biologic freight, a relay
on the road to some metaphysic
Point Omega?

Am I the apple
of Shelley's eye with which the universe
beholds itself?

Am I as moon to earth, earth to sun,
sun to some uncontrollable energy
transcending time
to show itself a while
as me?

Am I sans my Yes,
sans my No, deluded
by a comic ego?

Ed told me that I should read your work. Obviously he was impressed with your writing.

In this poem 'Unriddle Me', you've demonstrated effective use of poetic devices. I liked the internal rhyme in one line that for me provided emphasis ('fits, frights, appetites' It's clear you have a good command of the English language and this smooth composition makes it an interesting and though-provoking read. I'll definitely check out more of your work.

Nope ... yur just a passing fancy in a midnight dream, a man creatively afflicted with not enough esteem, a yearning heart that flows with most punches, a man who refuses to build his house on hunches, a poet extraordinaire, for what it's worth, a man bubbling with ideas and mirth, someone who loves scotch and big lakes, and one who knows the difference between authentic and fakes.

Yur good!

Gene - Wonderful wondering, touching on the great poets and thinkers from Shelley and Darwin to Carlyle's "the eternal yea to "the eternal nay" with a few of your own thrown in for good measure. You make the ideas live with your imagery and cadence. A great poem. - David

This reminds me of a line from a book I once read and I wish I could remember from which... 'Am I what I am because I am or am I what I am because I am not' Brilliant writing here!

Dare I float upon these waft ideals;
the tender questions of possibilities...

the embodiments of Love
tempering upon the dark side of her twists...or is it trysts....

Gene,
Yes to each and every question asked! You are all those and more, much more than the eloquent, erudite parts you evaluate, you're a gem of a writer, a diamond! This, for me, is your very best work. Take a bow, take a dozen. Simply beautiful and brilliant.

You offer up a superb challenge to all who read this gift. I'm going to be thinking on this some more before I write much else because your verses demand that I do so. No quick quip will suffice here dear friend. Bless you, J'nia

Your quest for being unriddled is a bomshell ! Facinating is only the beginning word, andIa absworbed by it and its way of asking for answers. As the ultimate compliment to you, I'm giving copies of it to a few of my PhD-ed friends... for their reaction. Whatever develops, I'll get back to you on it. Methinks for you, retirement is actually; rebirth! - Blill

you and we, are the antithesis of all you have herein listed -- for we have no durable mass and are in the universe, less than a neutrino -- you and we are the passion, the essence of all that would be, if we could but be -- the hyphens, exclamation marks, and question marks of empyrean parlance -- we are the essence, and yet, have never been, though we shall always be -- we are the marvel of galactic glee -- your "Unriddle Me" work is exploratory, humorous and above all thought provoking -- which suites my personal fancy to a tee my dear friend -- I'll buy the next round,if you'll promise us another worthy write -- much joy, peace and love to you -- Jon Michael

Undone by the wonder of your words, Gene - stunning achievement! And I am jealous: you get Anessa's rave reviews, another poet in her own right. Sigh. Well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Agree, you've set the standard of what poetry IS. And that's no riddle. :)

This is amazing work, Gene! I love every word of every line and the title is purely perfect. Once again, you have caused me to evaluate my own writing as I try these days to conjure/create something - anything - that will stir both heart and psyche. You have set the bar high and I will be adding this to my library of Williamson-greats. Your intellect, your spirit, your inquisitive and observant nature emanate from this poem like one bright, warm and welcome light.

whats crazy to me is: there are so many things youve conjured here that i would actually WISH to be. . . at least for an instant or an eon or so. .. . . esp "a shadow on the wall of Platos cave". .. or an Echo [mythic]. .. . reverberating love. .. and the Shelley. .. [good Lord, well...]. ... recants of Shakespearean sombre.. . .' a rose by any other name would smell as sweet'. .. but youve scientifically and didactically countered such modernism into the classical muse. . .. and yes...what you are IS a wonder; indeed.
and i wonder if i'll ever be as good as you.
dangit. :)
edible write.

Lots of questions here Gene; but only one answer that I know of. You were a gift from a Higher Power to your parents who thought of you in just that way. And you continue to be a gift to others through your writing. I'll meet you on the other side of Eternity my new found friend. A great write here poet. May God bless.
