by unseen scheme or chance, he
is the pulse of the here and now, all
too inattentive when he skips a beat,
breaks a stride, mismanages the hand

he is dealt. he is antecedent of the
yesterdays he fashioned and seldom
comprehends, touchstone to tomorrows
anticipated in his genes. he is, it

appears, a metaphoric conundrum,
who haunted caves in wooly hides,
imprinted huddled shadows on
primeval walls…spanned canyons,

scaled mountains on legs of mettle
and backs of giants, shoveled his way
from east to west, crawled with crabs
and demons of the deep, caught the wind,

hazarded ancestral seas that hurled him
into quiet bays, stranded him on shores
once roamed by mastodons. he left his
tracks on continents of ice and sand and

grand vistas sheltered by lofty timber
stretched beyond his ken or imaginings.
he planted, uprooted, recreated borders
that subdivided him by tongue, canon,

edict, status, hue, inherited instincts.
he is the schools he builds, the books
he reads, the books he burns, the tales
he tells, songs he sings, games he plays.

he is classified by acronyms. under
flaming banners he limps from battle
to siege, the blood on his hands
defining him. he captured the sun

to stoke his needs, built stone temples
and steel animated by ancient spells.
he pampered his ego in base metals,
silks, and filigree, abandoned reason

in lieu of arcane metaphysics. he is
seeking answers to unasked questions,
expanding his mind to dance with stars,
examine strange worlds unheard of by

cosmic routes uncharted. he is ticking
to the rhythm of timeless time, chafing
to snap his chains to the present, claim
the future written in his past. he is us.

A tour de force--so many images of the upright creature striding through it, creating as he (she?) goes, making, breaking, imagining, dreaming and learning. This is one to re-read many times.

concur with richardheart down there; a majestic and noble tone to it.....a beauty un.bound that few can write with....
the upright and even regal structure, so classic and captured against the slight grip of holding onto everything that makes us struggle with and within who we are and want to be.....
and the rhythms of a pulse, quickening and slowing.......stumbling adn crumbling over answers lost and found on this internal eternal journey....
you are fighting your way to brilliance and imagination's embrace.
all of life awaits still.....still.....so still.........

This has such a majestic feel to it gene.
Expressions like this make this whole creepy
internet process of sharing worthwhile. Kudos!
Nice format, and the use of lower case which,
in my reasoning, exemplifies a kind of humbleness.
I'm thinking that this is one of your masterworks.
You have touched many with this insight!
Blessings ...

leaves me breathless, actually, Gene. I am fascinated by this - the concepts, the progression, the images you choose to carve into the walls of man's edifice and structure. Your punctuation, use of lower-case, line-breaks... all of it builds to the sudden stop of just three words at the end. Boom-boom. My mind was running with a mythological figure to begin with... then awaiting an Armageddon, Apocalypse or Extinction at the end... Perhaps I'm not too far wide of the mark then, in that case! Very classy writing, Gene: the sense of momentum you have built into this tips us over the edge... xx

Gene,
I am captured within the aura of “timepiece”…feeling the unending progression of our here & now…from those caves of inscription to ink jet printers…we are destined to announce our time to the future…our moments…our visions…our everything….and the future looks at us too...
Peace & Blessings Poet!!

Gene - Excellent meditation on the puzzle that is the human being
( being as a verb.) :

he is antecedent of the
yesterdays he fashioned and seldom
comprehends, touchstone to tomorrows
anticipated in his genes. he is, it

appears, a metaphoric conundrum,

Love the paradox in,

he is antecedent of the
yesterdays he fashioned

he is ticking
to the rhythm of timeless time, chafing
to snap his chains to the present, claim
the future written in his past. he is us.

Too many good lines to quote them all. All time: past, present and future rolled into one. Profound and interestingly expressed.

Yes, he is every man. Chafing to snap his chains says it all, I think.I'm not certain that we were ever meant to be confined to this time/space continuum. I'm certain that we were never meant to age and then to die. Perhaps this is why we chafe at every constraint place upon us. We are now rebellious by nature. Hugs, J'nia

mankind's history into uncharted metaphoric waters -- you challenge our view of the past and suggest we look hard into the ride of our futures -- each, measured segments meted out in time, or its relative values in any other dimension -- a Gene Williamson presentation filled with exciting concepts and masterful writing -- peace and love my dear friend -- Jon Michael

Yep, that's us all right. Captured humanity perfect. That quest to seek the unknown and to conquer seems hardwired into our DNA. I suspect if we found a way to remove that strand, we would all be mindless blithering idiots drooling without madness--simple minded--the only goal the next bowl of oatmeal (cooked I hope).

Gene,
This is great history in poetry, and not just the history of ourselves but the effects of it and the attitude towards it. It is uplifting and positive because of the line you take, our good side if you will, the best of what we are capable of, but it's also wise in that you don't get carried away, there's an intellectual balance and a certain detachment, too.
And the writing is mighty.

Absolutely he is us. This was a good study of the evolution of man, the good and the bad, the explorer, the teacher, the killer the warrior, yes, indeed, he is us / We all know this, of course, although not all can express it as eloquently as this poem, but we all know this / What we don't know / What we continuously fail to grasp is the lessons of the past / As of now the "us" seems to have no knowledge of what has gone on before us and failed each and every time it has been tried, but it seems we are poised for yet one more try to create a euphoria and paradise on earth / And we should know by now that there ain't no such place / We should, but we do not.

People tend to use grand words like "magnificent" with the kind of frequency that degrades the word, its meaning and all its connotations. But, I can tell you it is aptly and rightly applicable here and now, Gene. Everything about this is right. I love your transitions between stanzas. You have absolutely exquisite form and you have once again proven yourself both a Master and a Mentor. This poem is going into my "favorites."

Chronology spans Paleolithic to Neolithic to modern-day man and woman has been beside him every step of the way. Timepiece is Evolution...sundial to waterclock tick tock takes us back a century when Cook and Peary each said they discovered the North Pole,

"hazarded ancestral seas that hurled him
into quiet bays, stranded him on shores
once roamed by mastodons. he left his
tracks on continents of ice and sand and"

and even further back when the caveman and his dinosaur roamed, making way for the experienced fossil excavator of modern-day who wears a digital timepiece

"he is classified by acronyms. under
flaming banners he limps from battle
to siege, the blood on his hands
defining him. he captured the sun"

Timepiece chronicles the broad swath of the population past and present, Gene...me...I keep time with the silver reputation of The Sundance Wives, gold pocket watch on a gold chain tucked in my canyon of cleavage as the cliffhangar dangles...I always know what time it is with you, Gene...

Love,
Sage
